Ogre by MagnaLeon Ogre by MagnaLeon
Well my gallery was getting a bit too cutesy so I had to throw an ogre to balance it all lol ;p

This pic was done just to test stuff... mainly I wanted to paint the whole thing with just the round brush in PS and no custom brushes, and basically use only one painting layer.
I didn't put much attention to composition and such, but more on the elements in there like skin, hair, rocks, wood, fur, grass, metal, bone and so on..... as I wanted to paint all those different textures with the same brush.

Well you get way more faves than I do... On dA, unless it's anime, Harry Potter or Eclipse it's tough to get faves. No worries though, your work speaks for itself!

Using just the one brush sounds reasonable... but having all this on one layer just boggles the mind and makes me feel disturbingly inferior. No way would I have enough confidence to do that. 0_o

I reckon the main thing that stands out to me here is the beautiful amount of detail in the metal work, and how the overall composition of it is remarkably spot on. The background is also really fitting, so kudos on just about everything, I think. =)

ah you forget one thing tho, I did say one brush, but I didn't say it had the same mode all times. If you paint in grayscale and then use the brush in color mode it will tint the gray like a layer in color mode will. That is enough for me to set it up for normal painting. But yea, you still need that confidence to keep it all in one layer... you can easily screw things up.... anyway, I still normally use more layers when painting, so this was just for this case.

and thanks! some of those details were much easier to do with the hard brush than when I used to use custom brushes a lot.

Amazing, specially when you think of One brush – One layer.
Oh, how I wish I could do that, not to you level of course…. But I’ve got a clue on how to do it.
I guess that’s when the lack of real life art classes shows
;)

thanks! well in the end it was a good learning experience, however, I won't do that again normally as I rather use more layers and some other brushes.

I did use one brush and one layer here but there's a trick to it. Remember that the brushes also have modes as layers do, so I can set my brush to normal mode and paint in grayscale, then set it to color/overlay/color dodge...etc. modes to tint it, then normal again to keep coloring. That it's almost like setting different layers tho trickier.

and yea, real life art classes help a lot, take them whenever you can.

haha thanks! ..but I still got a long way to go...and yea, after I finished that pic I realized that the round brush if used correctly, can be much better than any custom brush...

Well, maybe you're right.
Curently using only hard round brush with middle opacity to shade and then just smudge it. Much more easier than I was doing earlier.
